Vissla Cold Water Surf Gear: Boots, Gloves, and Hoods for Sessions Below 58°F
A 5/4 full suit alone is not enough for genuine cold water surfing. Below 55°F, the hands, feet, and head lose warmth at a rate that ends sessions early regardless of your neoprene torso coverage. Vissla Cold Water Necessities covers everything beyond the suit: split-toe surf boots, neoprene gloves that preserve enough feel to surf at full capacity, and hoods for when even an integrated hood needs reinforcement. Paired with a Vissla Hooded Full Suit, this collection completes the kit.
Building Your Cold Water Layering System by Temperature
At 58–55°F: most surfers are comfortable in a 4/3 full suit alone. Boots optional for longer sessions. At 55–52°F: add 5mm split-toe boots. At 52–48°F: add 3mm gloves and a hooded full suit or separate hood. Below 48°F: all four — hooded full suit, 5mm boots, 3mm gloves, and a separate hood layered over the integrated one for double coverage. This is the Pacific Northwest year-round standard kit.
Cold Water Surf Accessories
- Surf Boots: 5mm and 3mm neoprene split-toe construction. Split-toe maintains more deck feel than round-toe alternatives. 5mm for below 50°F, 3mm for 50–58°F.
- Surf Gloves: 3mm neoprene with dexterity to paddle and pop up at full performance. Most surfers hit the hand-function threshold around 50°F water.
- Surf Hoods: Separate neoprene hoods for additional coverage over a standard full suit or layered over a hooded full suit in extreme cold.
- Wetsuit Jackets and Vests: Additional core-warming layers for pre-session warmth or standalone coverage for mild conditions.
Benefits of Cold Water Gear from Vissla
- Session Extension: Adding boots and gloves at 50°F extends a session by 30–60 minutes before hands and feet become the limiting factor.
- Eco Neoprene: The same limestone-based and recycled rubber philosophy as the Vissla wetsuit range extends to boots, gloves, and hoods.
- Complete Kit Compatibility: All accessories designed to work with Vissla full suits. No mismatched thickness or incompatible seal geometry.
