SOUND BISCUITS | ANDREW JACOBSON

Sound Biscuits: Andrew Jacobson
Some surfers paddle out with a song stuck in their head. Andrew Jacobson isn't one of them. When the waves get real, everything goes quiet. The music comes after, when he's replaying the session and hunting for the track that fits. This playlist is that hunt: 19 songs, a little moody, a little heavy, built for cold water and long drives. Press play, then stick around for the conversation.
The Q&A
When you're actually in the water, what's going through your head? Is there ever a soundtrack playing up there, or does surfing quiet all of that down?
Honestly, it depends what the waves are doing. If I'm in substantial waves I'm not thinking of music. I don't think about anything else besides that moment. That's why I love to surf.
When you sat down to build this, did you have a feeling or a mood you were chasing, or did the playlist kind of reveal itself as you went?
This playlist is a bit more emotional but still hypes me up! I was just feeling that way the day you asked me to make a playlist. Could change in the next day though!
Outside of surfing, how do you actually feed your creativity? Is music part of that, or does it come from somewhere else?
When I'm done with a session, I like to think about how I surfed or where I surfed and what song would go well with that. Then I match the music with the waves in a video or on Instagram, etc.
A lot of surfers talk about the road and travel as being just as important as the surfing itself. Does music play into that for you? Does it change how a trip feels?
For sure, it's the whole vibe. But I think different playlists work for different times and moods. The DJ in shotgun is in control of the vibe on a trip. Have to read the room!
Is there an artist or album that genuinely changed how you see things, in or out of the water?
The first music I remember hearing was from my brothers, going up to surf contests in the car: Blink 182, Pennywise, NOFX, etc. That always stuck with me. That 90s era punk, Taylor Steele era. It got me inspired to want to surf and listen to that music.
If this playlist had a location, somewhere you've surfed, somewhere you've been, where would it be?
Probably somewhere a bit darker, cold and heavy waves. Like Ireland!
Last one. What's the one song on here you'd put on for someone who's never heard it and just say: trust me?
Probably "Frontwards" by Pavement. I don't think it's super known and it hits the feels and hypes me up.
Thanks bud!
