EP03 | From The Shed: Danny Hess
New Episodes Drop Every Friday
Ever wonder what goes into a wooden surfboard from one of the most dialed craftsmen in surfing?
In our latest series, filmed during our Creators Gathering, we keep digging into the personal quivers of the crew and the stories that shaped them.
Episode 03 hangs out with Danny Hess of Hess Surfboards, a creator known for building some of the best wooden boards on the planet. The interview takes place in the hills above Rincon, with Danny posted up in the back of his van and surrounded by the boards he knows best. The episode also pulls in some classic archival clips of him and Dan Malloy riding his shapes in Thomas Campbell’s film The Present. It's a rare look at a guy who usually keeps things pretty low key, especially when he steps away from The Woodshop, his home base in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset.
Danny walks through a few of his favorite personal boards and breaks down the materials, the ideas, and the waves that make each one special. It is a simple setup with a ton of good stories.
Watch the episode, explore the collection, and get stoked on what goes into making something by hand.
